Devilian is categorized as an MMOARPG. I can also describe it as an action RPG that has been fused together with the community foundations of an MMO. From my many years spent playing games like Diablo, World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, etc… I can say with confidence the developers over at Trion Worlds have been successful in fusing these two genres together. Over the years I have loved the two genres, but combining them in this matter is a first for me to see, let alone play.
Once you are done with your minimal tinkering, you will be sent off into the wild to save the land of Aelkenia. Once arrived, you’ll find a surprisingly good looking game that resembles a cross between Diablo and TERA, scantily clad armor and isometric view withstanding. Trion Worlds have made it so that you can use the more traditional WASD control scheme to navigate their world. However, the truth of the matter is, you will most likely be pointing and clicking your way around. Alas, do not be fooled by the control scheme, view or the ARPG moniker, Devilian is very much an MMO.
If you manage to forget this point at any time, the quest system will remind you with a firm slap to the face. What we have here is your typical system of go to A, kill, collect or click on X amount of B, return and repeat. It can be argued that it’s a proven system and it works, but that doesn’t make it fun. While other games may attempt to disguise this formula in different ways, Devilian makes very little effort to. Quests are supposedly split into three types: tutorial, main story and filler, however they all follow the aforementioned schematic. In short, if you were not a fan of the genre, Devilian is not here to make you change your mind.
Due to the high damage output, fast attack speed, and ability to almost spam AOE (frontal cone) attacks non-stop, they are able to plow through large groups of enemies without any problems at all. From questing to running the first dungeon, it’s very, very easy to just keep running to your destination while pulling a long train, then unleashing on the enemies, taking them all out at once. It saves time and effort when compared to trying to fight your way through one group at a time. At the same time, it is important to watch health and ensure you’re equipping gear as it drops, because it’s also easy to skip from one train to the next without healing, resulting in a death.
PvP players will delight to know that there are multiple forms of PvP in Devilian. 3v3 Battlegrounds are simple death match affairs while 6v6 battlegrounds are actually more PvE than PvP. Two teams race to beat the other team’s PvE boss before theirs is taken down. For larger scale combat, check out the 20v20 control point PvP battleground. Individual zones on the world map can be taken over by guilds, as well. Choose from four classes with their own unique skills and play styles. Unleash the power of a true devil with each class’ Awakening, increasing their strength and giving them access to devastating special abilities.
Devilian is what I would call a solid game. The combat is engaging and the graphics are good but not great. It is fun to play however it is not the kind of game that you want to replay or that will stick with you for years to come. What could have helped to set this game apart would have been a better delivery of its story-line or at least making the playable characters stand out from the rest of the NPCs.
